Bringing the mountains home: that is the starting point for two of our creations. On one side, the wooden wall topographic map, whose contour lines are laser-engraved in our workshop in Thônes, in Haute-Savoie. On the other, the 3D relief mountain lamp, backlit and made from the massif's real elevation data. Two closely related objects, two very different ways of living with a summit. Here is an honest comparison — both come out of the same workshop — to help you choose the one that suits you, or decide to pair them.
Let's start with what they have in common, because it is essential: neither one is an invented illustration. Both the map and the lamp are built from real topographic data. For the wall map, the massif's contour lines are drawn and then engraved into the wood, just like on a hiking map. For the lamp, high-precision elevation surveys — IGN's HD LIDAR data for France, a digital terrain model for the Aosta Valley — are used to rebuild the terrain in three dimensions.
In concrete terms: if you know the massif, you will recognize it. The valley is in its place, so is the ridge, and the pass is right where you crossed it. The difference between the two objects is therefore not their fidelity to the terrain, but the way they render it — and the way you will live with it.
The wall map translates the mountain the way a topographic map would: through its contour lines. The laser engraves these lines into the wood — Baltic birch or poplar plywood, sourced from sustainably managed forests — with millimeter precision. The result is a graphic object, matte and warm: the grain of the wood, the brown line of the engraving, the soft shadows between levels. The relief is suggested by the drawing rather than reproduced in volume: you read it more than you touch it, and that is exactly what map lovers enjoy.
That is its great practical strength. A map hangs like a frame: no cable, no outlet, no surface to give up. It dresses a living room wall, an office, an entryway, a chalet bedroom. And it works at two distances: from afar, it is a natural decorative piece that warms up the wall; up close, it truly reads — you look for the refuge, trace the route with your finger, point out the summit to your guests.
The lamp takes the opposite path from the map: instead of translating the relief into a drawing, it rebuilds it. From the elevation data, a high-definition 3D terrain is generated, then the lamp is made by 3D printing in the workshop. The valleys are genuinely hollowed out, the ridges genuinely raised: run your finger over the lamp and you are tracing the ridgeline. It is an object you look at from every side, not just head-on.
Switched off, it is already a beautiful object on display. Switched on, it is something else entirely: the warm light backlighting the relief catches every slope, draws out the shadows of the ridges and gives the room the feel of late afternoon at altitude. It is a true ambient lamp — on a nightstand, a shelf, a desk — and not just a decorative object. The accepted trade-off: it needs a surface to sit on and an outlet nearby.
Another major difference: the lamp is composed entirely online.
