At 3,842 metres above Chamonix, the Aiguille du Midi is arguably the most vertiginous belvedere in the French Alps. The Vanoise — glaciers and high valleys
Between the valleys of the Tarentaise and the Maurienne, the Vanoise was the first national park created in France, in 1963. Its relief tells two stories: down below, deep valleys carved by mountain torrents; up high, domes and hanging glaciers around the Grande Casse (3,855 m). This contrast between alpine pastures, great slopes and ice caps makes for a very balanced piece, less jagged than Chamonix, broader and more serene.

The Aosta Valley and Gran Paradiso — Italy's summits
On the far side of Mont Blanc, the Aosta Valley unfurls its side valleys beneath some of the greatest summits in Europe. Gran Paradiso (4,061 m) is the only summit above 4,000 metres lying entirely within Italy, at the heart of the country's oldest national park, created in 1922. The relief here is generous: broad, even slopes, hanging valleys on the side of Cogne and Valsavarenche, and glaciers crowning the whole. Glacial cirques carve out vast amphitheatres — Gavarnie and its wall being the most famous — the Vignemale (3,298 m) reigns over the French side, the Pic du Midi d'Ossau raises its lone fang above the Béarn, and the Canigou (2,784 m) rises up facing the plain of Roussillon.
