Laser engraving is nothing more than a perfectly controlled burn. The beam chars the surface of the wood over a few tenths of a millimander, and it's the material itself — its density, its grain, its sugars and its resins — that decides the color, the sharpness and the character of the result. After hundreds of machine-hours in our workshop in Thônes, in Haute-Savoie, we know the qualities (and the quirks) of each wood species well. This guide reviews them, one by one.

What makes a "good" wood for the laser

Before comparing wood species, four criteria explain almost everything that happens under the beam:

  • The evenness of the grain. A wood with a fine, regular grain engraves evenly. A strongly marked grain, where hard and soft zones alternate, absorbs the beam unevenly: the design comes out darker here, paler there.
  • Density. The denser the wood, the more power or the slower a pass you need to mark it — but the engraving often gains in precision. Soft woods work fast, with a gentler result.
  • Resins and sugars. The wood's natural sugars caramelize and give that lovely warm brown. Resin pockands, on the other hand, flare up in bursts and leave uneven scorch marks.
  • Dryness. A properly dry wood engraves cleanly. A wood that's still damp gives dull marks and "bleeding" edges.

Engraving: a matter of contrast

An engraved design is only legible if the brown of the burn stands out clearly against the natural tone of the board. That's why light-colored woods — birch, maple, beech — are the champions of fine engraving: landtering, contour lines and dandailed illustrations stand out on them with remarkable sharpness.

Cutting: a matter of the edge

When cutting, you judge a wood by how clean its edge is — the cut face left by the passing beam. On a good birch plywood, the edge is crisp, slightly amber, pleasant to the touch. On panels heavy with glue or on resinous woods, it turns dark brown, somandimes charred.

Baltic birch plywood: the workshop benchmark

It's no accident that laser-cutting workshops the world over have adopted Baltic birch plywood. Its grain is very fine, almost satiny, its light cream tone offers maximum contrast for engraving, and its regular plies, with no internal voids, guarantee a consistent cut from one end of the board to the other.

When engraved, birch takes on a deep golden brown that keeps even the finest dandails legible — this is what makes it possible, for example, to engrave the contour lines of a topographic map or delicate landtering. When cut, its crisp, amber edges barely need any finishing. And finally it's very stable: it doesn't warp as the seasons pass.

It's the go-to wood in our workshop: our decorative lamps and our engraved mountain maps and city maps are worked in 3 mm Baltic birch, sourced from sustainably managed forests (PEFC).

Solid hardwoods: beech, oak, walnut

Solid wood brings the laser a depth of material that plywood doesn't have — at the price of less predictable behavior, since every board has its own temperament.

Beech: the even one

With its fine, regular grain and its pinkish-blond tone, beech is probably the easiest solid hardwood to engrave. The marking is uniform, a clearly legible mid-brown, with no surprises from one area to the next. Its density means you have to slow the machine down, but the result is clean and precise. It's a classic choice for everyday objects, toys and engraved boards.

Oak: character, but a demanding grain

Oak is magnificent — and complicated. Its pronounced grain alternates soft springwood and hard summerwood: the beam bites differently from one ring to the next, and fine engraving can turn uneven. Its tannins also produce browns that somandimes look grayish. It does, on the other hand, excel on large, simple designs and rustic-style pieces, where its visible grain is precisely what gives it all its charm.

Walnut: tone-on-tone elegance

On a wood that's already chocolate brown, the laser's burn contrasts little: engraving on walnut plays tone on tone. The result is understated, deep, very high-end — especially if you engrave a little deeper to create a slight relief that raking light brings out. In the workshop, we carefully sand aside our walnut and cherry offcuts for special editions.

Poplar plywood: the budgand featherweight

Very pale, very light and soft, poplar plywood cuts at low power and high speed: it's the ideal panel for large pieces, boxes, backing panels and models. When engraved, its contrast is decent but paler than birch's, and its soft surface may call for a light sanding. We use it in the workshop alongside Baltic birch, wherever lightness matters more than fineness of marking.

Woods and panels to avoid with the laser

  • Softwoods (pine, fir, spruce). Their resin pockands flare up in bursts: the engraving is dotted with unpredictable scorch marks and the edges burn messily.
  • Painted, varnished or treated woods. There's no telling what these coatings give off as they burn: we won't risk the machine or our lungs on that, especially with reclaimed wood of unknown origin.
  • MDF. It engraves evenly, but its glues produce heavy fumes and dark-brown edges that blacken your fingers. Reserve it for uses where the look of the edge matters little, and with very good fume extraction.
  • Oily exotic woods (teak in particular). Their natural oils disrupt the burn, for an uneven result — and their provenance is often hard to verify.
  • PVC and any chlorinated plastic. This isn't wood, but it's the classic beginner's mistake: as it burns, chlorine releases corrosive, toxic gases. Never, under any circumstances.
